    Steps

    1. Upload your MP4 or MOV above. You can use the free preview of the first 5 seconds before paying.
    2. Wait for processing, about 20 to 30 seconds for a 10-second 1080p clip.
    3. Download the transparent WebM. Free clips above 30 fps are processed at 30 fps. A paid payment covers up to 3,600 frames; for longer frame counts you choose 30 fps for the whole clip or the first 3,600 frames.
    4. In OBS, click + in the Sources panel, choose Media Source, and select the file. Tick Loop if the overlay should repeat.
    5. Place it above your other sources in the scene.

We have not tested this import ourselves. OBS's Media Sources documentation lists "Video: .mp4, .ts, .mov, .flv, .mkv, .avi, .gif, .webm" as supported formats, and describes Loop as "Specifies whether the file play again once playback has completed". It also lists an option "Restart playback when source becomes active" ("Sets the file to restart once the source is in the current scene and visible"). OBS's documentation does not state whether WebM alpha is displayed as transparency. Download the sample file below and try it in your version of OBS first.

Why it can look black, and how to check the alpha channel

A player that does not use the alpha data shows only the color image, and in some players or in Safari a transparent WebM can look black or opaque even though the file has an alpha channel. MDN states: "Note however that Safari does not support alpha transparency in this format." (about VP9). Test in another player or browser before concluding the file is wrong.

Two checks that do not depend on a player:

    1. ffprobe. Run ffprobe -show_streams file.webm. On our sample, the default decoder reports pix_fmt=yuv420p together with the stream tag ALPHA_MODE=1. Running ffprobe -c:v libvpx-vp9 file.webm reports yuva420p. Either one indicates an alpha channel.
    2. Colored background. Place the file over a colored layer in an editor or a Chromium-based browser. If the color shows around the person, the alpha is working.

Using the WebM on a web page

You can use the file in a <video> element with autoplay, muted and loop. According to MDN, VP9 is supported by Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera and Safari, but Safari does not support alpha transparency. We have not tested other browsers' alpha handling here, so test the sample in the browsers you care about. For Safari visitors, consider a fallback such as a background-color MP4.

    FAQ

Can I make a transparent WebM for OBS from a recorded video?

Yes. Upload an MP4 or MOV and download a transparent WebM (VP9 with alpha) with the original audio. It works on recorded clips only, not live webcam keying.

    Does OBS support WebM transparency?

OBS's Media Sources documentation lists .webm as a supported video format but does not state alpha support. We have not tested it ourselves, so download the sample and try it in your version. If it does not work, use the green screen MP4 with OBS's Chroma Key filter.

    Is the original audio kept?

Yes, as Opus in the WebM. In the MOV ProRes 4444 export it is PCM. The transparent GIF has no audio.

    How much does it cost?

Free for clips up to 10 seconds (3 per day, no watermark). $4.99 one-time, no subscription, for clips over 10 seconds up to 2 minutes, including all export formats.

Why does my transparent WebM look black in a player?

Some players do not use the alpha channel, and MDN says Safari does not support alpha transparency in VP9. Check the file with ffprobe or by placing it over a colored background in another program.

How do I make the overlay loop in OBS?

Add the file as a Media Source and tick Loop, which OBS documents as specifying whether the file plays again once playback has completed.
